In this article:
A safe driver award program recognizes drivers who go a set time or distance without a preventable crash. The best-known U.S. programs, as of October 2026, are run by the National Safety Council (NSC), the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). Each publishes its own eligibility rules, and most hinge on how "preventable" is judged.
The seven programs below are the ones whose published rules we could open and check:
- NSC Safe Driver Award (1 to 45 years)
- NSC Million Mile Award
- NSC Expert Driver Award
- TCA Professional Drivers of the Year
- TCA Highway Angel
- ATA America's Road Team
- ATA National Truck Driving Championships and state championships
Safe driver awards compared
| Award | Run by | Who can be recognized | Safety standard (as published) | How a driver gets in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safe Driver Award | NSC | Employees of NSC member organizations whose job includes driving | Each year without a preventable collision; license not revoked or suspended | Employer applies through NSC membership |
| Million Mile Award | NSC | Same as above | One million miles without a preventable collision | Employer applies through NSC membership |
| Expert Driver Award | NSC | Same as above | A number of years or miles without a preventable incident, at least one year or 100,000 miles | Employer applies through NSC membership |
| Professional Drivers of the Year | TCA | Drivers employed by a TCA carrier member | "Superior safety records" plus impact on industry, colleagues, community and employer | Employer nominates, up to five per company |
| Highway Angel | TCA | Professional truck drivers | Courtesy and courage shown to others on the road | Anyone who knows of the deed can nominate |
| America's Road Team | ATA | Full-time company drivers or owner-operators | "Outstanding safety record", a minimum three years of safe driving miles | Nominated by an executive of an ATA member, or self-sponsored owner-operator |
| Truck Driving Championships | ATA and state associations | Drivers entered by their carrier | Preventable accident-free record since the previous championship | Carrier enters the driver at the state level first |
As of October 2026, from each program's own published rules, linked in the sections below.
1. NSC Safe Driver Award
NSC calls its Safe Driver awards "the highest honor for professional safe driving performance." The NSC Safe Driver Award Program Rule Book opens it to "NSC member organizations within the United States" and their employees whose job includes driving and who drive "without being involved in a preventable motor vehicle collision" and without a revoked or suspended license. Awards run from 1 to 45 years.
The rules that matter most in practice:
- Preventable means the driver "failed to do everything that reasonably could have been done to avoid a collision."
- A preventable incident costs 12 months of driving time, counted from the driver's anniversary date, not the crash date.
- No restart. The proving period was eliminated in 2001, so a driver does not start over after an early incident.
- Absences of up to 15 working days per award period, not counting vacation or military leave, do not move the anniversary date.
- Excluded: contractors, drivers who only drive seasonally or on standby, and employees who drive their own car only to get to a route.

2. NSC Million Mile Award
The Million Mile Award, in the same NSC rule book, recognizes "one million miles driven without a preventable collision", with a lapel pin and the mileage increment. The same eligibility, preventability and record rules as the Safe Driver Award apply. An employer may credit safe driving under previous employers if it gets a certification from them listing dates and all incidents, preventable or not.
3. NSC Expert Driver Award
The Expert Driver Award honors employees for a set number of years or miles without a preventable incident, with a minimum of one year or 100,000 miles, according to the NSC rule book. It comes as a certificate, an engraved plaque or etched crystal.
4. TCA Professional Drivers of the Year
The TCA Professional Drivers of the Year program names up to five drivers a year, and each receives $20,000. TCA looks for drivers with "superior safety records" who have made a significant impact over the past year on the industry, their fellow drivers, their community and their employer. The published rules:
- The driver must be employed by a TCA carrier member, and the nominator must be the current employer.
- Each company may nominate up to five drivers, but only one per company can win.
- TCA verifies by contacting the carrier and may check motor vehicle reports and run other background checks.
- For the 2027 awards, applications open October 19, 2026 and close December 4, 2026.
5. TCA Highway Angel
The Highway Angel program, run by TCA since 1997, recognizes professional truck drivers "for the exemplary courtesy and courage they have shown others". It is not a mileage award: it honors a specific good deed on the road. TCA says it recognizes more than 50 drivers a year and more than 1,250 to date. The site invites anyone who knows of a driver's heroic deed on the road to nominate them.
6. ATA America's Road Team
America's Road Team is ATA's group of driver captains who talk about highway safety at public events, schools and state capitols, and on ride-alongs with policymakers and the media (ATA). The 2026-2027 nomination brochure sets these rules:
- Candidates must be full-time truck drivers, company drivers or independent owner-operators, driving at least 80 hours in each four-week period.
- They need "an outstanding safety record" with "a minimum three years safe driving miles".
- They must be able to clearly communicate their commitment to safety and professionalism.
- The nominating company must be a full dues-paying ATA member, and must keep paying the driver's full salary and benefits while they serve.
- Finalists submit drug and alcohol program records, a medical certificate, a CDL copy and an MVR.
A candidate can serve two consecutive terms, then sits out one selection.
7. ATA National Truck Driving Championships
The National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) test drivers on a written exam, a pre-trip inspection and a skills course, after state-level contests (NTDC). The 2026 TDC Accident Eligibility Criteria require a "preventable accident-free record" from the day after the previous championship through the current one. The carrier reviews every collision using ATA's preventability guidelines. Three kinds of incidents do not disqualify: a properly parked vehicle that is hit, a vehicle stopped for a traffic control device or police officer, and certain animal strikes. Any crash the carrier rules non-preventable must still go to ATA's eligibility review committee.
The 2027 national event is set for August 10-13, 2027, in Columbus, Ohio.
How to use these programs in your fleet
These awards carry weight because their rules are written down and applied the same way to everyone. The NSC rule book states the principle directly: an employer "should give this recognition promptly and impartially whenever It's earned." A few practices come straight from the published rules.
- Keep complete incident records. NSC says awards must rest on "accurate records of each driver's experience", and "guesswork and dependence on recollections are not acceptable."
- Set up a review committee for borderline crashes. NSC suggests a management chair, a transportation supervisor, a maintenance representative and two of the fleet's professional drivers. Our guide to preventable vs non-preventable crashes covers how that call is made.
- Keep award records apart from discipline. NSC says its rules "are not to be used for disciplinary purposes."
- Put deadlines on the calendar. TCA's 2027 window closes December 4, 2026. America's Road Team nominations for the 2026-2027 team closed September 5, 2025, so watch ATA for the next cycle.
Awards for years of safe driving sit alongside monthly recognition, not in place of it. For monthly awards, see our guide to a driver of the month program.
