The best fleet safety software for a trucking fleet is the tool that closes the gap behind its weakest safety category, not the one with the longest feature list. Most fleets combine four kinds of tool: video telematics, a driver-risk or safety management platform, a compliance system and driver training. Below is what nine vendors say their products do, as of October 2026.
The categories and the vendors in each:
- Telematics platforms with AI dash cams: Samsara, Motive, Geotab
- Video safety specialists: Lytx, Netradyne
- Safety management and driver-risk platforms: Idelic, SambaSafety
- Compliance management software: J. J. Keller Encompass
- Driver training software: CarriersEdge
How this list was built
Every vendor fact below comes from the vendor's own public page, opened in October 2026 and linked at the claim. The list is grouped by category, not ranked. None of the nine pages linked here lists a dollar price (CarriersEdge links to a separate pricing calculator), so no prices appear here. There are no review-site star ratings and no claims that one product beats another. Customer counts appear only where the vendor states them, and they are attributed to the vendor. If a vendor's page did not say something, this guide does not say it either.

Match the software to the safety category you need to fix
Fleet safety software is only as useful as the problem it targets. FMCSA's Safety Measurement System (SMS) sorts roadside and crash data into seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs), and each one maps to specific regulations (FMCSA CSA: Measure). Start with the BASIC that worries you, then pick the category of software that produces evidence for it.
| BASIC (as of October 2026) | Regulations FMCSA lists | Software category that helps most | Question to ask the vendor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unsafe Driving | 49 CFR 392, 397 | Video telematics | Which behaviors does the camera detect, and how does a clip reach a coach? |
| Crash Indicator | Crashes, not violations | Video telematics | Can I export the full crash sequence as a video file? |
| Hours-of-Service Compliance | 49 CFR 392, 395 | Compliance software, ELD platform | Does it audit every log, or a sample? |
| Vehicle Maintenance | 49 CFR 392, 393, 396 | Telematics, maintenance tracking | Does it track repairs against inspection reports? |
| Controlled Substances/Alcohol | 49 CFR 382, 392 | Compliance software | Does it track Clearinghouse queries and test records? |
| Driver Fitness | 49 CFR 383, 391 | Compliance software, driver-risk monitoring | Does it flag expiring medical cards and license changes? |
| Hazardous Materials Compliance | 49 CFR 397 and the HMRs | Compliance software | Does it cover hazmat training and paperwork? |
Two details matter more than any feature list. First, the Crash Indicator counts crashes "regardless of the carrier or driver's role in the crash" (CSA: Measure). Second, FMCSA's preventability review program accepts "any other type of crash" where "a video demonstrates the sequence of events," for crashes on or after Dec. 1, 2024 (89 FR 96269). So a camera that saves and exports the whole crash sequence can help a crash come out of your Crash Indicator, when the video shows it was not preventable. Our guide to preventable vs non-preventable crashes covers that review, and CSA BASICs explained covers each category.
Telematics platforms with AI dash cams
These platforms pair vehicle data with cameras. They suit fleets that want one vendor for location, alerts and video. For a camera-only comparison, see our best dash cam for trucking fleets guide and Samsara vs Motive.
Samsara
Samsara's safety page, headed "AI Dash Cams and Video," offers "AI-powered safety detections and on-demand video retrieval" (Samsara). The in-cab alerts it lists include forward collision warning, pedestrian collision warning, lane departure warning and tailgating. It says it monitors "17+ fatigue indicators," and it describes coaching "at scale with custom workflows" and a driver app. Samsara's pricing page asks for your fleet size in a quote form and shows no dollar amounts (Samsara pricing). Fits fleets that want detections, coaching and a driver app from one vendor.
Motive
Motive's camera page leads with "The AI Dashcam Plus" and says the device runs "30+ high-precision AI models simultaneously" (Motive). Its FAQ lists detections such as mobile device use, close following, stop-sign violations and seat belt violations. The page offers "Contact sales" instead of a price. Fits fleets that want one dash cam that watches for a wide set of behaviors.
Geotab
Geotab's fleet safety page offers "in-cab driver feedback, rules and alerts" and says you can "Track speeding, seat belt use and harsh braking" and "Calculate your fleet's safety score" (Geotab). It mentions "AI-powered commercial dash cams" and points to the Geotab Marketplace for add-ons such as "behavior-based automated driver training." No pricing is shown. Fits fleets that want telematics data first and add-on tools from partners.
Video safety specialists
Video-first vendors build their product around the camera and the coaching that follows a recorded event.
Lytx
Lytx's home page headline is "Video Safety and Telematics for Fleets," and it describes "adaptive coaching workflows that help drivers build lasting safe habits" (Lytx). Lytx says it serves "more than 7,000 organizations" and "over 6.3 million drivers." Its own footnote calls its machine-vision technology "a driver aid only." Pricing sits behind a "Get Pricing" form. Fits fleets that want a video program where coaching is the main workflow.
Netradyne
Netradyne describes its product as "machine vision, AI camera technology" and lists a "GreenZone performance rating system" and "recognition-based safety for drivers" (Netradyne). The page also says "200M+ DriverStars awarded," as part of what it calls recognition-based safety. No pricing is published. Fits fleets that want video that records good driving as well as risky events.
Safety management and driver-risk platforms
Fleet safety management software sits on top of the data you already collect. It suits fleets whose problem is scattered information, not a missing camera.
Idelic
Idelic's headline is "One Platform to Streamline Fleet Safety." It says "We integrate with your existing vendors to bring all driver-related data into Safety Suite" and calls the result "a single source of truth" (Idelic). The page does not list specific integrations or prices. Fits fleets that already run several safety tools and want one place to manage drivers.
SambaSafety
SambaSafety says it combines driving records, telematics, CSA and claims data in one platform (SambaSafety). It describes "continuous visibility into violations, license status changes, CSA incidents," motor vehicle records (MVRs) ordered "through direct DMV connections in all 50 states," and online training with "more than 400 mastery-based courses." SambaSafety says "more than 16,000 businesses" trust it. No pricing is published. Fits fleets that want to know about license and violation changes between the annual MVR review.
Compliance management software
Compliance software keeps the records an auditor or investigator asks for. It suits fleets preparing for a new entrant safety audit or compliance review.
J. J. Keller Encompass
The product page for the "J. J. Keller Encompass Fleet Safety & Compliance Platform" lists driver qualification checklists, "Alcohol & drug program management," "Hours of service – 100% log auditing & reporting," "Preventive maintenance (PM) tracking," management of CSA scores and roadside inspections, accident recordkeeping, and MVR monitoring with "near real-time notifications" (J. J. Keller). It says it is "Used by fleets with 1 to 3,000 drivers!" No price is shown. Fits fleets that want driver files, testing records and log audits in one system.
Driver training software
Training software delivers the coursework that follows a violation, a crash or a new hire.
CarriersEdge
CarriersEdge offers "Online truck driver training" and describes "Interactive online training for small and midsize fleets" with a content library "built specifically for trucking" (CarriersEdge). The page says setup needs "no fulltime admin or IT department" and offers a free trial, with pricing on a separate page. Fits fleets that want online courses without building a training team.
What fleet safety software can't do
Fleet safety software cannot change your safety rating by itself. FMCSA assigns ratings after a compliance review, and its SMS site warns that readers "should not draw conclusions about a carrier's overall safety condition simply based on the data displayed" (FMCSA SMS). What software can do is produce the records and evidence a review looks for. Three limits to keep in mind:
- Alerts don't replace the driver. Lytx's own page calls its technology a driver aid, and the same caution applies to any in-cab alert.
- Electronic records are allowed, with conditions. As of October 2026, 49 CFR 390.32 lets carriers "use electronic methods" for required records, if those records can be kept and accurately reproduced (eCFR 390.32).
- A dashboard score is not a BASIC percentile. Vendor safety scores use the vendor's own math. Your percentiles come only from FMCSA. Our guide on how to improve CSA scores explains that math.
Buyer checklist: questions to ask before you sign
These questions come from the records the regulations require and the evidence FMCSA programs accept. Retention periods are as of October 2026 (final rules, in effect).
| Ask the vendor | Why it matters | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| How long are records kept, and can I export them? | Driver qualification files stay for employment plus 3 years | 49 CFR 391.51 |
| Are logs and supporting documents kept at least 6 months? | That is the carrier's retention period for duty records | 49 CFR 395.8 |
| Does the inspection report keep repair certifications? | DVIRs and repair certifications are kept 3 months | 49 CFR 396.11 |
| Can it hold the accident register? | The register is kept 3 years after each accident | 49 CFR 390.15 |
| Does it track annual Clearinghouse queries per driver? | Every driver needs a query at least once a year | 49 CFR 382.701 |
| Can I export a full crash video and the inspection reports? | Evidence for preventability reviews and data challenges | 89 FR 96269 |
| Who owns the data when the contract ends? | You still owe the records after you switch vendors | The rules above |
| What does the driver see, and how is coaching delivered? | Drivers will ask what is recorded and who sees it | Ask for the driver view |
| What hardware is required, and who installs it? | Hardware drives cost and downtime | Ask for the install plan |
| How is it priced, and for how long? | None of the nine pages linked above lists a dollar price | Ask for a written quote |
The export question matters most. A data challenge or a crash review is only as good as the record you can attach to it.
