Lytx vs Samsara is a choice between a video safety specialist and an operations platform. Lytx builds its offer around the DriveCam camera, structured coaching and AI backed by human review. Samsara sells AI dash cams as one part of a platform that also covers telematics, electronic logging devices (ELDs), maintenance and driver apps. Both offer dual-facing cameras, in-cab alerts, coaching tools and an ELD on FMCSA's list.

Everything below comes from each company's own pages and FMCSA's ELD list, opened October 20, 2026. Neither page we opened lists a price.

The cameras compared

Lytx DriveCam. Lytx describes an "AI-powered commercial dash cam" with a dual wide-angle lens, infrared night vision, and an integrated microphone recording audio "from inside and outside the vehicle." It lists built-in driver badge ID, engine control module (ECM) connectivity for speed and fuel data, live streaming, a manual record button, and "up to 400 hours of reliable, continual video" on the SF400 or newer. Lytx says DriveCam "detects over 100 risk indicators," including distracted driving, unsafe following distance and seat belt non-compliance.

Samsara Dual-Facing AI Dash Cam. Samsara's feature list includes forward collision warning, camera obstruction, mobile usage, no seat belt, speeding at 10, 15 or 25 mph over, rolling stops, drowsiness, lane departure, live streaming, and a parking mode that records 1 to 12 hours after a trip. Its dash cam page states 1440p front-facing resolution, local storage, LTE connectivity with fallback, and drowsiness detection based on "17+ fatigue indicators." Driver ID can use a token, a QR code, or Camera ID, which uses footage and machine learning to assign drivers to trips.

How the video safety programs differ

Both companies route minor events to the driver and serious ones to a manager. They describe the machinery differently.

Lytx (fleet safety):

  • Lower-severity events go to drivers for Self-Coaching, "a short, guided review they complete on their own."
  • "Higher-risk or repeated behaviors stay with managers." Coach Assist uses generative AI to prepare each session with "strengths, areas to improve, and peer comparisons."
  • "You set the thresholds that decide which events go where."
  • Dynamic Risk combines in-cab behavior with road and weather conditions. Fatigue Detection and highway or ramp parking detection are listed features.
  • Lytx says its AI "is trained on over one million hours of video and enhanced by professional human review, meaning fewer false positives."

Samsara (dash cam page):

  • Real-time in-cab alerts let drivers self-coach "before a safety event is sent to a manager."
  • Samsara says its AI prioritizes events "based on a complete risk analysis (looking at 45+ factors such as severity, frequency, patterns, and context)," then delivers "in-cab alerts, self-coaching, or manager-supported sessions."
  • Coaching tools listed: In-Cab Nudges, AI-powered event triage, customizable coaching workflows, group coaching, a Safety Inbox for event review, and Connected Training lessons.
  • Safety Scores are "calculated using a mix of Harsh Events, Speeding Events, and AI-detected unsafe driving behavior events over time."

The practical difference for a safety team: Lytx puts human review into the event pipeline, and Samsara stresses automated triage across a wider data set. Neither approach is shown here to be better. Test both on your own trucks and count missed events and false alerts.

Driver privacy features

Privacy question (as of October 2026)LytxSamsara
Detect in-cab risk without storing driver video?Yes: Risk ID Without Recording, "without having inside-lens footage stored on the device"Not stated on the pages opened
Blur faces in footage?Lytx Conceal blurring is "currently only available in Europe" (Lytx privacy and security)Yes: driver, passenger and pedestrian faces, and license plates
Physically cover the driver lens? Not stated on the pages openedDriver-facing and dual lens covers sold as accessories
Road-facing-only camera? Not stated on the pages opened (DriveCam is dual-lens)Front-Facing AI Dash Cam
Data security statementsEncryption at rest and in transit; SOC 2 and ISO 27001 for DriveCam and Surfsight (Lytx privacy and security)Samsara lists "encrypted security"

Whichever you choose, the fleet sets the policy. If the camera works with the ELD, FMCSA's harassment rule covers information from "other technology used in combination with and not separable from the ELD" (49 CFR 390.36).

ELD and the rest of the platform

Lytx. FMCSA's ELD list shows "Lytx ELD" from Lytx, Inc., on models SF300, SF400, GO9B and GO10 (the last two are Geotab devices). Lytx says DriveCam devices "help automate hours of service (HOS) reporting and compliance." Its all-in-one product, LytxOne, combines video safety, telematics, maintenance, DVIR workflows and fuel reporting. Lytx+ pairs Lytx video with Geotab telematics.

Samsara. FMCSA's list shows "Samsara ELD" from Samsara Inc. on its Vehicle Gateway (VG). Samsara's ELD page says the platform can automate "annotating yard moves and managing unassigned HOS, with geofencing and AI-powered annotations," and that the Samsara Driver App runs HOS, inspections and dispatch. Samsara lists "over 350 API integrations" in its App Marketplace.

Both lists are self-certified. FMCSA's page says it "does not endorse any electronic logging devices."

How each is sold

Lytx lists several routes (Lytx home):

  • Direct, through "Get Pricing" and its sales team.
  • Surfsight, a "video safety solution sold exclusively through resellers worldwide."
  • Lytx+, with Geotab telematics.
  • Partner programs for telematics service providers and insurers.
  • A limited-time trial: "Trial services are provided at no cost for up to 1 month. Fees for shipment of hardware may apply."

Samsara routes buyers through its pricing page, which asks how many vehicles or assets you have, and through its sales team. It also lists OEM partnerships and pre-delivery installation.

Neither publishes prices on the pages we opened, so compare written quotes for the same hardware, term and features.

What each vendor says about results

These are the vendors' own claims, not independent findings.

  • Lytx says its program brings an "80% reduction in claims costs," footnoted as an "estimate based upon a select sampling of Lytx client data" (Lytx fleet safety).
  • Samsara says its 2025 Safety Report found customers "typically experience a 35–40% aggregate reduction in crashes over time," and that fleets of 175+ vehicles using its full AI safety suite "see ~75% decrease in crash rate over 30 months" (Samsara dash cams).

Which fits your fleet

Fit is based only on what each vendor says it is built for, as of October 2026.

Questions to ask both vendors

  1. Which ELD identifier will we run, and is it on FMCSA's list today?
  2. Who reviews flagged events, and how fast does a driver see one?
  3. What can be detected without storing driver-facing video?
  4. How many hours of video stay on the device, and what uploads automatically?
  5. What are the contract term, renewal terms and hardware ownership?
  6. What will a 30-day trial on our own lanes measure?

Does Lytx have an ELD? Yes. "Lytx ELD" is on FMCSA's list, and Lytx says ELD "is just one part of LytxOne."

Does Samsara record the driver? The Dual-Facing AI Dash Cam does. The Front-Facing AI Dash Cam records only the road. Samsara also lists face blurring and lens covers.

Can drivers see their own events? Lytx says the Lytx Driver App helps "drivers review performance results and track their progress." Samsara says its Driver App gives drivers access to "training or coaching workflows."

Which one works with Geotab? Lytx sells Lytx+ as video "integrated with Geotab telematics." The Samsara pages we opened don't name a Geotab integration, so ask Samsara directly.
