Motive vs Lytx is often framed as "ELD bundle vs video-only," but neither is video-only. Motive's AI Dashcam Plus combines its electronic logging device (ELD) gateway and dash cam in one windshield unit, inside a platform that also covers telematics, maintenance and a fleet card. Lytx is a video safety specialist whose DriveCam runs Lytx's own ELD, sold alone or as LytxOne or with Geotab.
Both companies list dual-facing cameras, in-cab alerts, AI with human review of events, and an ELD on FMCSA's list. Everything below comes from each company's own pages and FMCSA's ELD list, opened October 20, 2026. Neither lists a price.
Motive vs Lytx at a glance
As of October 2026.
| Motive | Lytx | |
|---|---|---|
| Main camera | AI Dashcam Plus, road-facing or dual-facing | DriveCam SF-series, dual wide-angle lens |
| ELD hardware | Vehicle Gateway built into AI Dashcam Plus | DriveCam with engine connection, or Geotab GO devices |
| ELD on FMCSA's list | Motive ELD | Lytx ELD |
| Extra views | AI Omnicam (side, rear, passenger, cargo) | Up to 4 auxiliary cameras |
| Events detected (each vendor counts differently; not a like-for-like measure) | "20+ safety events" | "over 100 risk indicators" |
| Event review | Event Validation Engine plus Motive's Safety Team; AI-only option | AI "enhanced by professional human review" |
| Coaching | AI Coach videos, Safety Score, manager sessions | Self-Coaching, Coach Assist, configurable workflows |
| In-cab privacy | Driver Privacy Mode; "Driver Privacy – AI On"; blurring | Risk ID Without Recording |
| Beyond safety | Telematics, equipment, maintenance, spend management (fleet card), workforce | LytxOne telematics, maintenance, DVIR; compliance services |
The bundling question: one device or two
Motive. The AI Dashcam Plus "combines the Vehicle Gateway and AI Dashcam into one device," which Motive says cuts install time "almost in half" and "typically installs in under 15 minutes." Motive's ELD page explains the gateway's role: "The Motive Vehicle Gateway is an ELD, a hardware device that connects to the diagnostic port (ECM) of a vehicle." Used alone, the Motive Driver App is an editable electronic logbook, not an ELD.
Lytx. Lytx's DriveCam connects to the engine for "speed, fuel, and other vehicle data," and Lytx says DriveCam devices "help automate hours of service (HOS) reporting and compliance." FMCSA's ELD list shows "Lytx ELD" on SF300, SF400, GO9B and GO10 hardware; the last two are Geotab devices. Lytx also sells LytxOne, which it calls an "all-in-one fleet management solution," and Lytx+ with Geotab telematics.
So the real choice is how you want the stack built. Motive puts the ELD and camera in one box from one vendor. Lytx can do the same through DriveCam and LytxOne, or sit on top of Geotab telematics you already run.
FMCSA's list shows "Motive ELD" from Motive Technologies, Inc. on hardware "LBB-1 and higher." Ask Motive which listed model your AI Dashcam Plus runs as, and check the list's Revoked tab too. FMCSA says the list is self-certified and that it "does not endorse any electronic logging devices."

The cameras compared
Motive AI Dashcam Plus. Motive lists a 1440p zoom lens, live two-way calling, noise-canceling audio and dual-band GPS. Some features are still arriving. Motive says features available only on the AI Dashcam Plus, including running "30+ high-precision AI models simultaneously" and Collision Evidence Capture, "will launch throughout 2026," and stereo vision is "Coming late 2026." On its driver safety page, Motive lists engine-off recording for up to 24 hours, time-lapse recall from "the last nine days," and the AI Omnicam for blind spots.
Lytx DriveCam. Lytx lists a dual wide-angle lens covering road and cab, infrared night vision, a microphone recording audio "from inside and outside the vehicle," driver badge ID, live streaming, a manual record button, up to four auxiliary cameras, and up to 400 hours of continual video on the SF400 or newer.
AI review and coaching
Both vendors put people behind the AI, in different places.
Motive (driver coaching):
- Fleets "choose which behaviors to detect and when." Events over the threshold trigger an in-cab alert.
- EVE, Motive's Event Validation Engine, assigns each event a confidence score. High-confidence events go to managers, and "the Motive Safety Team reviews low-confidence events to remove false positives." Customers "can choose to validate events with cloud-based AI models only."
- AI Coach sends drivers "personalized, AI-generated coaching videos" from an avatar. On its driver safety page, Motive says managers can pick a preset avatar "or use AI to recreate your own face and voice."
- Coaching sessions can cover HOS violations and "Form & Manner errors" alongside safety, which is where the ELD bundle shows up in daily work.
- Motive says it detects positive behaviors such as "safe distancing" and "alert driving," and that "positive driving events don't count against Safety Scores."
Lytx (fleet safety):
- Lytx says its AI "is trained on over one million hours of video and enhanced by professional human review."
- Lower-severity events go to drivers for Self-Coaching. "Higher-risk or repeated behaviors stay with managers," prepared by Coach Assist (generative AI).
- "You set the thresholds that decide which events go where."
- Recognition tools: "scorecards and milestones to reward top performers."
Each vendor's accuracy claims are its own. Motive says "up to 99% accuracy"; Lytx stresses human review. Trial both on your own trucks and count missed events and false alerts.
Privacy and state-law notes
| As of October 2026 | Motive | Lytx |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off the driver-facing camera | Driver Privacy Mode, "when a driver is off duty or vehicle is stationary" | Not stated on the pages opened |
| AI detection without storing driver video | "Driver Privacy – AI On" | Risk ID Without Recording |
| Blurring | Privacy Blurring in driver- and road-facing footage | Lytx Conceal, "currently only available in Europe" (Lytx privacy and security) |
| Retention | Set "from two weeks to indefinitely" | "As long as necessary" under contracts and law |
| Face-based driver ID | Face Match, which "does not function in the state of Illinois" | Badge ID built into DriveCam |
Motive's Illinois footnote tracks the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act. It covers a "scan of hand or face geometry" and bars collecting one unless the person is first informed in writing and the company "receives a written release" (740 ILCS 14/15(b)). Motive also says Collision Evidence Capture "is not available in AR, NH, ME."
Because both cameras can feed the ELD, FMCSA's harassment rule applies. It covers information from "other technology used in combination with and not separable from the ELD" (49 CFR 390.36).
ELD features that matter day to day
From Motive's ELD page, as of October 2026:
- The gateway treats the truck as moving above 5 mph, and Motive notes "the 5 MPH... speed threshold is not configurable as per the ELD mandate."
- Personal conveyance and yard moves are available "when enabled by the fleet manager," matching the carrier choice in 49 CFR 395.28.
- Motive says it supports "separate rules for property and passenger-carrying vehicles" and the oilfield exception in 395.1(d).
- Unassigned driving goes to an unidentified driver profile, and Smart Trip Match suggests the driver.
Lytx's pages opened here describe HOS automation through DriveCam and the Lytx ELD listing but don't detail these settings, so ask Lytx the same four questions. Our how to choose an ELD guide lists what the regulation requires of any device.

How each is sold, and what each claims
Motive routes buyers to sales through "Get started" and its pricing page, which shows no prices. Motive says customers insured by one of its "40+ insurance partners" can "save up to 10% on insurance premiums."
Lytx sells directly, through resellers as Surfsight, and as Lytx+ with Geotab (Lytx home). It lists a limited-time trial at "no cost for up to 1 month," with possible hardware shipping fees. Lytx says its program brings an "80% reduction in claims costs," footnoted as an "estimate based upon a select sampling of Lytx client data."
These are vendor claims, not independent findings.
Which fits your fleet
Fit is based only on what each vendor says it is built for, as of October 2026.
| If you want… | Motive fits when… | Lytx fits when… |
|---|---|---|
| ELD and camera in one unit | You want the gateway built into the dash cam | DriveCam as the ELD device suits you |
| To keep Geotab telematics | Not described on the pages opened; ask Motive | Lytx+ keeps Geotab |
| A fleet card from the same vendor | Motive offers one | Not described on the pages opened |
| Human review of flagged events | Low-confidence events go to Motive's team, or choose AI-only | Lytx describes human review in its pipeline |
| Face-based driver ID | Face Match (not in Illinois) | Badge ID instead |
| Reseller purchase | Not described on the pages opened (Motive routes buyers to its sales team) | Surfsight is reseller-only |
Questions to ask both vendors
- Which ELD identifier and hardware model will we run, and is it on FMCSA's list today?
- Who reviews flagged events, and how fast?
- What can be detected without storing driver-facing video?
- How does driver ID work in each state we operate in?
- Which features on the quote are shipping now, and which are scheduled?
